Slumped wine bottles are also referred to as melted bottles, smashed bottles, heated bottles, crushed bottles, and flattened bottles! A slumped wine bottle is a bottle that has melted, flattened, or collapsed into a shape by using extreme heat in a kiln. The flat or concave shape of the bottle after it has been slumped makes for the perfect cheese plate, charcuterie platter, olive or cracker bowl, spoon rest, soap dish, succulent planter or votive candle holder! The Slumping Process
How do you make melted flattened wine bottles?
Step 1: Collecting & Emptying Wine Bottles – My husband and I are always looking for unique wine bottles when we go shopping. We ENJOY emptying the bottles (drinking the wine) ourselves or we have friends that give us their empty bottles.
Step 2: Soak, Scrape & Scrub – removing the labels is the hardest part! The bottles are soaked in hot water to soften the labels. Then the labels are scraped off with a blade and finally the bottles are scrubbed clean.
Step 3: Load ‘er up – The clean bottles get placed in the kiln and heated up to 1400 degrees which is when the bottles become soft enough to collapse flat or into their shape.
Step 4: The Unveiling – The EXCITING part! Opening up the kiln (after it has cooled) and seeing what we got! Bottle slumping is not a perfect process. Sometimes the bottles get cloudy or sharp edges. Step 5: Finishing Touches – Painting and wire wrapping!
